Apple TV is returning to the multiverse this month with the second season of Dark Matter. The 10-episode season premieres Friday, Aug. 28, followed by one new episode every Friday through Oct. 30.
Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly return as Jason and Daniela Dessen, with the story beginning after the family appears to have escaped the immediate crisis of the first season. Their safety does not last, and the consequences of Jason’s continued fixation on the Box threaten to pull the family back into danger.
The new episodes also expand storylines involving Amanda, Ryan, Blair and Leighton. That broader focus should allow the series to explore alternate worlds without requiring every conflict to remain centered on one version of Jason.
When Does Dark Matter Season 2 Premiere?
The first episode will be available globally on Apple TV on Aug. 28. Apple is not releasing several episodes at once, so viewers will need to follow the story weekly or wait until the end of October for the complete season.
The Friday schedule places the finale on Oct. 30. Release times may vary slightly by region and device, so the Apple TV application should be treated as the final local listing.
The weekly format gives each episode time to develop speculation about which world the characters have entered and which version of a familiar person is on screen. It also means a subscriber who joins on premiere day may pay across several billing cycles.
Dark Matter Season 2 Episode Schedule
Apple has confirmed 10 episodes and a Friday release pattern. Episode 1 arrives Aug. 28, followed by episodes on Sept. 4, Sept. 11, Sept. 18 and Sept. 25.

What Is Season 2 About?
The Dessen family begins the season attempting to settle into what appears to be a peaceful and secure world. That stability is disrupted when an unimaginable development forces the family to run again.
Jason becomes increasingly obsessed with the Box, the technology that allows travelers to enter alternate realities shaped by possible choices. Daniela’s growing paranoia pushes her toward a breaking point, while Charlie wants the kind of stability his parents can no longer guarantee.
Elsewhere, Amanda and Ryan join forces in an attempt to find their way home. Blair becomes determined to stop Leighton, who continues pursuing his vision of creating a perfect world.
The premise allows the second season to move beyond a simple chase between two versions of Jason. The danger now comes from several people using the Box for different purposes and from the possibility that a seemingly perfect reality may hide its own costs.
What Happened in Season 1?
The first season followed Jason Dessen, a physicist and professor abducted while walking home in Chicago. He awakened in an alternate life where he had chosen scientific ambition over the family he built with Daniela.
The man responsible was another version of Jason who regretted his own choices and wanted to take over the family life he had abandoned. The original Jason used the Box to search through possible worlds and eventually returned home.
The complication was that the Box produced many versions of Jason who had all experienced variations of the same search. The ending left the family facing not one unwanted alternate but a crowd of desperate men who believed they had an equal claim to Daniela and Charlie.
Season two therefore begins with a family that has survived the first threat but cannot erase its knowledge of the multiverse. Jason knows that another life can always be reached, and that knowledge becomes dangerous even when no one is actively pursuing him.
Who Returns for Season 2?
Joel Edgerton returns as Jason Dessen, while Jennifer Connelly returns as Daniela. Both actors are also executive producers on the series.
Alice Braga returns as Amanda, Jimmi Simpson as Ryan, Dayo Okeniyi as Leighton, Oakes Fegley as Charlie and Amanda Brugel as Blair. Apple has identified all five as members of the returning ensemble.
The expanded roles for Amanda, Ryan, Blair and Leighton should give the second season several parallel points of view. Their experiences may also answer questions about what happens to people who become trapped in a world that is not their own.
Is Season 2 Based on a Book?
The series was created by Blake Crouch and is based on his bestselling 2016 novel. Crouch serves as showrunner and writer, but the second season moves beyond the complete narrative contained in the original book.
That does not mean the story is being continued without its author. Crouch co-wrote every episode of the second season with executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry.
Readers therefore cannot simply consult a sequel novel to learn the ending. The television series is becoming the primary version of the continuing story.

Apple and Sony Pictures Television are launching Dark Matter: The Official Podcast alongside the second season. Crouch and Ben-Zekry will host discussions about major story developments, the science of the multiverse and the creative process.
A catch-up episode will arrive before the premiere to summarize key events from season one. New podcast episodes will then be released with the television installments and will include cast members, creative personnel and outside guests.
Viewers trying to avoid spoilers should watch the corresponding television episode before listening. The podcast is designed as a deeper examination rather than a substitute for the series.

Dark Matter is available exclusively through Apple TV. Apple lists the service at $12.99 per month in the United States and offers a seven-day trial to eligible new customers.

Do You Need to Watch Season 1?
Season two directly continues the story of Jason, Daniela, Charlie and the Box. New viewers would lose much of the emotional meaning if they began with the second-season premiere.
The first season establishes the rules of traveling through the Box and explains why several versions of Jason exist. It also develops Amanda, Ryan, Blair and Leighton, whose stories become more important in the new episodes.
A full rewatch is the best preparation, but the official podcast’s catch-up episode may help viewers who remember the broad story and need only a refresher. The new season is not being positioned as a reset or a standalone adventure.
