Arctic air has plunged deep into the United States, delivering dangerously cold conditions to the Deep South while communities along the East Coast dig out from the weekend’s ice and snow.
Utilities are racing to restore service to thousands left without power by the catastrophic ice storm, even as forecasters warn the pattern may spawn a second, potentially significant winter storm along the East Coast next weekend.
Crews from the Carolinas to New England spent the day clearing roads and sidewalks, mindful that subfreezing air would quickly refreeze any melt and keep black ice a persistent hazard.
Meteorologists emphasize that it is too early to pin down precise totals for the next system, but they note that several consistent model runs in the last day have flagged the risk of a nor’easter developing late next weekend. That prospect is drawing close attention from cities still hauling away snowbanks and trimming damaged trees after the first storm. The immediate threat, however, is the cold itself, which is not just cold, it is dangerous in exposed settings.
Deep South faces the harshest chill
Some of the coldest air in years has invaded the Gulf states, with readings in the teens and 20s and wind chills plunging below zero in several inland pockets. Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in minutes when wind chills fall that low, and that hypothermia becomes a risk for anyone without adequate shelter or heat.
The air mass is widespread and persistent, which increases the risk to vulnerable people and pets as temperatures remain suppressed through successive nights.
Public messaging reflects the scale of the event. More than 200 million Americans are under some type of cold weather alert, and Extreme Cold Warnings now reach to parts of the Gulf Coast. In many communities, the combination of lingering ice, intermittent power service and bitter wind chills has prompted local leaders to expand warming centers and extend hours at shelters. Hospitals and EMS units across the South have reported increased calls for cold exposure, slips and falls, and traffic incidents on untreated roads.
Another coastal storm may organize next weekend
While the present focus remains on keeping people warm and restoring power, the broader pattern is drawing eyes to the weekend of January 31–February 1, 2026, when a coastal low could spin up near the Southeast and ride north.
The setup would be classic nor’easter territory if the ingredients align, with a strong temperature contrast, ample Atlantic moisture and a jet configuration that favors cyclogenesis off the Mid-Atlantic.
In that scenario, parts of the Northeast and New England could see heavy snow and strong winds, especially where cold air is entrenched.
Forecast confidence at this lead time is necessarily limited. Small shifts in track would dramatically change who sees snow, who endures a wintry mix and who changes to rain. The precise location of the rain–snow line and the timing of coastal intensification often do not lock in until 48 to 72 hours before the first flakes fly. Residents along the I-95 corridor, from Washington to Boston, should watch forecast updates closely while cleanup continues from the last storm.
Power restoration and infrastructure strains
Ice accretion from the first storm snapped limbs and power lines across portions of the South, leaving thousands without electricity during a period of exceptional cold.
Utilities prioritized transmission and major feeders to stabilize the grid before peeling off crews to neighborhood circuits. In hard-hit corridors, downed trees and slick secondary roads slowed bucket trucks and required plow escorts. Officials cautioned that some repairs would take longer where equipment failures stacked up or where access remained limited.
Water systems and transportation networks are contending with the cold as well. Municipalities reported frozen service lines and urged residents to protect indoor plumbing by maintaining heat and allowing taps to drip in the coldest zones.
Transportation departments warned that salt becomes less effective in frigid air, which means black ice will continue to redevelop overnight even on recently treated surfaces. Rail and air operations are also working through lingering disruptions as aircraft and crews return to position.
