Indianapolis police say a pre-dawn shooting on the city’s northwest side left at least two people dead and five others injured Sunday.
Officers were called to the 6900 block of Shore Terrace at about 2:30 a.m., where gunfire erupted in a parking lot and multiple victims were found.
What we know so far
Initial reports from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department indicated seven gunshot victims. Two people were pronounced dead, and five others were taken to hospitals for treatment. Investigators said three of the wounded were in critical condition in the early hours after the attack.
Detectives spent the morning processing the scene, gathering shell casings, photographing evidence and canvassing the area for surveillance footage.
As of midmorning, police had not announced an arrest, described a suspect, or outlined a potential motive. Officers urged anyone with information or cellphone video to come forward.
The department asked residents to avoid the area while crime-lab technicians and homicide investigators worked. The location is a densely populated stretch of apartment buildings and businesses, which complicated efforts to secure the perimeter and interview witnesses before they dispersed.
Victims and condition updates
Authorities said six men and one woman were struck by gunfire. The identities of those killed were being withheld pending family notification.
Trauma teams at local hospitals coordinated with dispatchers to track incoming patients and relay condition updates back to detectives.
Police emphasized that casualty figures and patient conditions can change as hospitals perform evaluations. Detectives planned to re-interview key witnesses after medical staff stabilized the most seriously injured victims.
Police response and requests to the public
Uniformed officers, homicide detectives and IMPD’s victim assistance unit responded to the scene. Patrol commanders set up a staging area for investigators and for residents who were willing to provide statements.
Investigators asked nearby businesses and apartment managers to preserve any exterior camera footage from late Saturday night into early Sunday.
Detectives also reminded residents that anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana. They said even brief video clips of vehicles or people leaving the area around the time of the shooting could help establish a timeline.
