Boater rescues two from burning boat off Hallandale Beach

A Florida boater helped rescue two people after their vessel erupted in flames off the Broward County coast on Monday, November 3, 2025.

The good Samaritan, Judson Grosvenor, said he spotted a column of smoke near Hallandale Beach, raced toward the blaze, and was first on scene before Coast Guard and local fire-rescue boats arrived. Both boaters were brought safely to shore.

No injuries were reported.

A plume of smoke and a split-second decision

Grosvenor said he was underway when dark smoke rose on the horizon and he altered course to investigate.

As he closed in, the vessel was already fully involved. “It was totally in flames when we got there,” he said, describing an intense fire that had overtaken the boat and sent thick smoke curling across the water.

He immediately radioed and phoned for help while pushing his own boat to the scene. Flames and heat made a direct approach risky, so he maneuvered to the safest angle he could find, keeping clear of exploding debris while scanning the water for survivors.

One person was visible in the ocean near the burning hull. Grosvenor said he pulled that survivor aboard as quickly as possible.

Finding a second survivor as crews converged

Once on his deck, the first survivor told Grosvenor a second person was adrift in a life jacket north of the fire. Grosvenor relayed the information and began searching the chop for any sign of the other boater.

First responders arrived almost simultaneously, according to Grosvenor, but he did not wait for them to close the last distance. He jumped into the water, located the second survivor, and helped guide Coast Guard personnel to the pick-up point.

On the surface, the scene was chaotic but coordinated. Coast Guard crews and local marine units fanned out to secure a perimeter, while fire-rescue teams attacked the blaze with deck-mounted hoses.

As the flames were knocked down, responders worked to ensure there were no additional people in the water and to keep pleasure craft away from hot debris drifting downwind.

Coast Guard and local agencies knock down the fire

Multiple agencies responded, including Hollywood Fire Rescue, Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, alongside Coast Guard boats. Witnesses on shore watched as the hull burned to the waterline, while aircraft and marine units circled overhead and around the scene.

Officials said the two rescued boaters were transferred to authorities and taken to shore for evaluation. Both were reported to be in stable condition with no injuries.

Marine firefighters kept streams trained on the remains of the vessel until the flames were extinguished. Tow services later assessed what was left of the boat, though responders said there appeared to be little to salvage after the fire was out.

Authorities reminded nearby boaters to maintain a safe distance during active marine emergencies and to heed instructions from rescue crews who establish safety zones.
