What began as a jubilant celebration for Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League title win turned to chaos on Monday when a car plowed through a crowd of pedestrians in the heart of Liverpool, England, leaving multiple people injured and the city in shock. Authorities have described the incident as a “major” public safety event.
Thousands had gathered in downtown Liverpool to celebrate the football club’s championship win when a black vehicle broke through the crowd, ramming into parade-goers and knocking down several individuals. Videos posted to social media and verified by NBC News captured the vehicle speeding through the densely packed streets, sending people scrambling for safety.
According to Merseyside Police, the car “stopped at the scene and a male was detained.” In a later update, authorities confirmed the suspect is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. Police have not yet confirmed a motive.
Footage shows the crowd initially surrounding the vehicle, banging on it before it suddenly accelerated into the throng, running over at least six people, according to eyewitness reports. The streets, once filled with chants and flags, quickly turned to scenes of panic, shouting, and emergency response.
Eyewitnesses Recount the Horror
Eyewitness Natasha Rinaldi described the pandemonium to Sky News, saying, “We could just hear screams and screams. We were very confused.” Rinaldi reported that people tried to break the car’s windows as the driver was confronted by angry fans. “The police did everything to block and to push people away.”
Another onlooker, Harry Rashid, said the incident happened just ten feet from his family, including his wife and two young daughters.
“It emerged from just right next to an ambulance… and just rammed into all the people at the side of us,” he told the PA news agency.
He described the street as narrow and congested, leaving bystanders with little room to escape.
Authorities and Officials Respond
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the scenes “appalling” in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My thoughts are with all those injured or affected.” He confirmed he is receiving ongoing updates as the situation develops.
Liverpool FC also released a statement on X, expressing concern and support: “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected.” The club confirmed that it is working closely with local law enforcement.
While the number of confirmed injuries has not been finalized, multiple people were seen lying on the ground in the aftermath, with emergency vehicles swarming the area. Police cordoned off the street as forensic teams began their investigation into what caused the terrifying turn of events.
The attack has cast a dark cloud over what was supposed to be a historic day of celebration for Liverpool.
The club’s latest Premier League title was a moment of immense pride for its fans, but the sudden eruption of violence has left many shaken and grieving.
