Federal law enforcement officials announced the largest seizure to date of chemical precursors used in the production of methamphetamine, intercepting 1,300 barrels of illicit substances shipped from China and destined for Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel.
The massive bust was revealed during a press conference Wednesday in Pasadena, Texas, by United States Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro.
According to Pirro, the chemicals were being shipped aboard two vessels that were intercepted on the high seas, carrying more than 363,000 pounds of benzyl alcohol and 334,000 pounds of N-Methylformamide — both of which are used to manufacture methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs.
Seized Chemicals Could Have Produced $569M in Meth
Officials estimate that the volume of seized precursor chemicals was sufficient to produce approximately 420,000 pounds of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value exceeding $569 million.
These synthetic drugs, had they reached their intended destination, would have been processed in Mexico by the Sinaloa Cartel and likely smuggled into the U.S. for domestic distribution.
“Tons of chemicals that are used to create synthetic drugs like methamphetamine and fentanyl are shipped from China to Mexico in China’s undeclared war against America,” Pirro stated during the press conference.
ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons emphasized that the focus of the operation was to disrupt the supply chain of drug manufacturing — specifically, the precursor materials — rather than only targeting traffickers in possession of the finished product.
“Had these precursors made it to the destination, they would have made hundreds of thousands of pounds of methamphetamine, with profits of over half a billion dollars,” Lyons said. “Which would lead to more American deaths here, not only in Houston, but all across the country.”
Originated from China, Bound for Sinaloa Cartel
The barrels were reportedly shipped from the port of Shanghai, China, and loaded into 1,300 containers. Although officials declined to specify the exact location of the seizure, they confirmed it occurred in international waters.
The intended recipients, according to investigators, were members of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent drug trafficking organizations.
The chemicals were not yet converted into narcotics but would have been processed into methamphetamine after reaching cartel-operated labs in Mexico.
Pirro said the interdiction is expected to significantly disrupt the cartel’s manufacturing operations, at least in the short term.
While the seizure represents a significant victory in the fight against synthetic drug production, Pirro acknowledged that criminal organizations may eventually recover, noting, “It may take them a while to recoup from the loss.”
