Elon Musk may be taking steps to ease the escalating feud between himself and President Donald Trump, as new reports suggest the Tesla and SpaceX CEO could speak with senior White House aides Friday.
The potential outreach comes after a week of highly public attacks between the two powerful figures—centered on government subsidies, a high-stakes spending bill, and explosive allegations by Musk.
No Call Scheduled, but Musk Wants a Conversation
Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy reported Friday that while no direct call is currently scheduled between Musk and Trump, White House officials confirmed Musk has expressed interest in speaking.
“No call scheduled or had. Musk wants a call. POTUS hasn’t made a decision,” one source told the network.
According to aides, President Trump is unlikely to speak directly with Musk at this point, but staff may attempt to de-escalate the situation.
The outreach effort comes as both camps try to manage the fallout from Musk’s recent comments and Trump’s public rebuke.
Feud Fueled by EV Cuts and Spending Bill Dispute
Tensions flared earlier this week when Musk lashed out at the Trump-backed “Big Beautiful Bill,” calling it a “disgusting abomination” and criticizing the GOP for embracing what he claimed was a pork-filled spending package.
“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk wrote Tuesday on X. “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
In response, Trump posted to Truth Social on Thursday that Musk had become “unmanageable” after the administration cut EV mandates—policies that previously benefited Musk’s businesses.
“Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave,” Trump wrote.
“I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted… and he just went CRAZY!”
Musk Drops Epstein Bombshell, White House Responds
The feud took a more personal and explosive turn Thursday when Musk accused Trump of being in the unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files. “@RealDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files,” Musk posted on X. “That is the real reason they have not been made public.”
The White House quickly responded, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissing Musk’s allegations as politically motivated.
“This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted,” Leavitt said. “The President is focused on passing this historic piece of legislation and making our country great again.”
Trump Hints at Ending Federal Support for Musk Ventures
Trump appeared to raise the stakes further by threatening to end government subsidies and contracts tied to Musk’s companies.
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget—Billions and Billions of Dollars—is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” he said on Truth Social. “I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”
Adding to the symbolism of the split, Fox News reported that a red Tesla purchased by Trump during a Tesla demonstration at the White House earlier this year is now slated to be sold or given away. As of Friday, it remained parked near the West Executive entrance.
Can Cooler Heads Prevail?
The potential talks between Musk and White House aides may offer a path to easing tensions, but the feud has already inflicted visible political damage on both sides.
Musk has positioned himself as a vocal opponent of bloated government spending, while Trump has framed the “Big Beautiful Bill” as a historic achievement in fiscal discipline and economic reform.
With Trump pushing for passage of the bill and Musk rallying opposition online, their fallout has highlighted the divide between populist conservatism and libertarian-leaning tech-sector interests—a division that could reshape internal GOP dynamics.
