New satellite images have revealed a humiliating setback for North Korea’s military ambitions: a 5,000-ton naval destroyer left mangled and partly submerged after a botched launch ceremony this week.
The failed event, meant to showcase the regime’s naval strength, reportedly left dictator Kim Jong Un furious and embarrassed on the global stage.
Satellite Captures the Aftermath of the Failed Launch
Images released by Maxar Technologies show the wreckage of the warship at North Korea’s Chongjin port, where the destroyer now lies on its side, damaged and partly underwater. The once-pristine vessel is seen twisted and draped in a blue tarp, a likely attempt by the regime to obscure the full extent of the disaster.
Prior to the launch, Maxar had also captured the destroyer in an intact and polished state, signaling the regime’s high expectations for the event.
However, according to North Korean state media, the vessel’s launch mechanism failed, causing a flatcar meant to guide the ship to malfunction. This failure led to parts of the hull being crushed before the stern finally slid into the water.
Kim Jong Un’s Rage and Retaliation
Reports from state-controlled media indicate that Kim Jong Un erupted in anger over the incident, calling it a “serious accident and criminal act” rooted in “absolute carelessness, irresponsibility, and unscientific empiricism.”
In a chilling warning, Kim vowed that the responsible military officials, scientists, and shipyard workers would face consequences, hinting at a broader crackdown during the upcoming June meeting of the Communist Party’s Central Committee. Under Kim’s rule, such declarations have often preceded purges or severe punishments.
Kim reportedly ordered immediate repairs to the vessel ahead of the June deadline, determined to recover from the international embarrassment and continue projecting power despite the failure.
Military Ambitions in Overdrive
The launch mishap comes amid North Korea’s intensified focus on military expansion, including controversial new weapons programs and international military involvement.
In March, Kim personally oversaw tests of AI-powered suicide drones, lethal autonomous weapons designed for offensive operations without risking human soldiers.
Kim also claimed recently that North Korea is in the advanced stages of building a nuclear-powered submarine, a provocative move that has alarmed regional and global powers alike.
Beyond weapons development, the regime took a bold and symbolic step by deploying 15,000 North Korean troops to assist Russia in Ukraine, marking the country’s first direct combat involvement since the Korean War in the 1950s. According to South Korean defense reports, over 600 North Korean soldiers have already been killed in the conflict.
