A predawn shooting at Oklahoma State University’s Carreker East residence hall in Stillwater left multiple people injured early Sunday, October 19, 2025. Officers responded at about 3:40 a.m. after reports of gunfire at the dorm, university police said in an initial statement.

What police say happened
University police said the shooting followed a large, private off-campus party. Some attendees returned to the Carreker East residence hall, where the gunfire occurred shortly afterward.
Officers learned of the attack when victims reported the shooting from locations away from the dorm, according to the AP’s summary of the department’s account. Investigators asked those who were at the party or who returned to the dorm to contact OSU Police with any information that could assist the case.
Carreker East sits on the north side of the Stillwater campus on McElroy Road. Police did not disclose the type of weapon used, how many rounds were fired, or whether security cameras captured the incident.
As of Sunday morning, authorities had not publicly announced any arrests or identified the shooter. Fox News noted it was unclear whether any suspects were among the injured.
Victims and medical response
Officials confirmed one of the wounded is an OSU student. The other patients were not immediately identified. Police and campus officials did not release ages, hometowns, or class years, citing the early stage of the investigation. Paramedics and campus responders triaged the scene and coordinated transports to regional trauma centers, according to the AP.
KOCO, citing OSU Police, reported three individuals were hospitalized and that campus officials continued to coordinate with Stillwater Fire and EMS on notifications and family assistance.
Police did not provide a timetable for additional medical updates. The university said counselors and student affairs staff would be available to residents of Carreker East and to students who may have witnessed the incident, though formal details on expanded counseling hours were not immediately posted overnight.
Campus status and safety guidance
Shortly after officers cleared the immediate area, OSU Police said there was no ongoing threat to the public. Students who do not live in Carreker East were asked to avoid the hall while detectives processed the scene, Fox News reported.
University operations outside the affected residence hall were expected to continue Sunday, though residents of Carreker East were told to monitor official alerts for possible access limits as the investigation proceeded.
The incident occurred during homecoming week, which drew alumni and families to Stillwater for weekend events. KOCO reported that campus officials acknowledged the influx of visitors and said patrols were focused on maintaining safety across major gathering points, including the student union and residence facilities.
Investigation and what officials are seeking
Detectives are working to reconstruct the sequence from the off-campus party to the return to Carreker East, then to the shooting. Investigators asked anyone who attended the private event, traveled with the crowd back to the dorm, or recorded video to contact OSU Police.
The AP reported that the department is reviewing cellphone footage and canvassing for surveillance video from the residence hall and nearby buildings, along with interviews of residents and guests who were in the area at the time.
Authorities have not released a motive. Officials also did not say whether the shooting involved people who live in the hall, guests of residents, or attendees who returned from the party without connections to the dorm. The police chief did not address whether campus access controls or guest sign-in procedures were in effect at the time.
