SpaceX moon city plans are now the company’s top near-term priority, according to Elon Musk, marking a shift from his long-running public emphasis on Mars.

In a Feb. 8, 2026, post on X, Musk said SpaceX has “already shifted focus” to building a “self-growing city” on the moon, arguing the lunar timeline could be under a decade while a comparable push to Mars would take 20-plus years, according to Reuters.

Musk said SpaceX still intends to pursue a Mars settlement, but on a slower track. He also framed the moon as the fastest route for building and iterating the kind of infrastructure he believes would be needed for a permanent off-world presence.

In his X posts, Musk described the goal as a “self-growing city” on the moon. He said the point is faster iteration and strategic urgency, while maintaining SpaceX’s stated mission of extending life beyond Earth, Reuters reported.

The change is notable partly because Musk previously argued the opposite. Reuters and other outlets noted that in January 2025, he responded to a post on X by saying SpaceX was “going straight to Mars” and that the moon was a “distraction.” The new framing places the moon first, with Mars still in view but pushed out.

Musk’s comments arrived as SpaceX continues to develop Starship as its next-generation launch system. While the company has not released a detailed public blueprint for a lunar “city,” the statement suggests SpaceX is aligning its near-term engineering and capital priorities around the moon.

Why the moon is presented as the faster path

Musk’s main argument is cadence. He said trips to Mars depend on launch windows that come about every 26 months, and that the travel time is about six months. By contrast, he wrote that SpaceX can launch to the moon far more frequently, roughly every 10 days, with about a two-day transit, enabling faster testing and redesign cycles.

That cadence claim ties to how SpaceX typically builds hardware, using repeated tests and rapid iteration. The moon’s proximity makes it easier to adjust designs, swap out components, and return to flight sooner after problems, compared with the long wait for the next Mars alignment.

Competition is part of the backdrop. Reuters reported Musk’s renewed lunar focus comes as U.S. officials and industry leaders increasingly point to China as a serious competitor in returning humans to the moon this decade. Humans have not visited the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972, a historical marker that still shapes the political urgency around lunar timelines.

Musk’s public posts overlap with reporting that SpaceX has already signaled a lunar-first sequence to investors. The Wall Street Journal reported, and Reuters confirmed in follow-up coverage, that SpaceX told investors it would prioritize lunar missions before attempting a Mars landing, with an uncrewed moon mission targeted for March 2027.

That timeline sits alongside SpaceX’s role in NASA’s Artemis program. NASA selected Starship as the Human Landing System for Artemis, initially under a $2.89 billion award announced in April 2021, and later expanded work through additional options and modifications, including an approximately $1.15 billion contract modification announced in November 2022. In reporting since then, Reuters and Bloomberg have described NASA’s total Starship lunar-lander contract value as roughly $4 billion.

NASA has also pushed for more competition. In October 2025, Reuters reported NASA sought rival bids to SpaceX for Artemis III after delays and concerns about meeting development milestones, a move that signaled the agency’s desire to reduce single-provider risk.

A moon-first plan does not automatically mean NASA’s schedule gets easier. Starship still must demonstrate key capabilities, including orbital refueling and reliable mission execution. The March 2027 uncrewed target, if met, would be a meaningful milestone for validating systems needed for later crewed missions, but it would not eliminate technical hurdles that remain unsolved at scale.
