A SpaceX Starship rocket exploded late Wednesday night at the company’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, during preparations for its tenth test flight.

While the blast lit up the sky in a dramatic fireball, the company confirmed that no injuries occurred and nearby communities were not at risk.

The explosion happened around 11 p.m. local time as SpaceX engineers were fueling the prototype — known as Ship 36 — with liquid oxygen and high-energy methane.

The rocket was stationed on the test stand for pre-launch procedures when it suffered what the company described as a “major anomaly.”

“A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for,” SpaceX said in a post on X.

The company added that it is working closely with local authorities and advised the public not to approach the site during “safing” operations.

Video captured by LabPadre, a group that monitors SpaceX activity at Starbase, showed two distinct explosions. The first appeared near the nose of the Starship, while the second erupted from the rocket’s side, shortly after fueling began.

Following the incident, SpaceX emphasized that no hazardous materials had reached surrounding areas and that the safety perimeter held firm.

“There are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities,” the company stated, attempting to ease concerns from locals who witnessed the blast.

Starbase is located at the southernmost tip of Texas, close to the Gulf of Mexico and just miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. While the facility is isolated from major population centers, any explosion involving high-energy rocket fuel naturally draws scrutiny.

The company’s quick reassurances — and the lack of injuries — likely helped contain the fallout, both literal and political.

Pattern of Explosive Setbacks in Starship Program

This latest test marks the tenth Starship-related flight or ground preparation attempt in the last two years. Of the nine previous tests, the first three ended in explosions or mid-flight disintegrations.

A handful achieved partial success before the spacecraft either broke up on reentry or spun out of control.

The most recent Starship launch, in May, managed to reach its flight trajectory but ultimately disintegrated during atmospheric reentry.

SpaceX has maintained that each test provides crucial data toward its goal of building a fully reusable launch system for missions to the moon, Mars, and beyond.

Ship 36 was expected to fly atop a massive Super Heavy booster later this month. The integrated system is designed to lift heavy cargo and human crews far beyond Earth’s orbit — a core part of Elon Musk’s vision for space colonization. With Wednesday’s failure, that timeline is now likely in question.

While SpaceX has proven resilient in the face of high-profile failures, another explosion may draw increased scrutiny from federal regulators.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will almost certainly investigate the incident, especially given its previous involvement in grounding launches after safety violations or malfunctions.
