A senior Kremlin official has confirmed that the United States and Russia have reached a preliminary agreement to hold a high-level meeting between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin in the coming days.
This would mark their first official sit-down since Trump began his second term earlier this year.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov made the statement following recent diplomatic talks in Moscow, signaling that preparations are underway for a bilateral meeting focused on resolving the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
U.S. Proposed High-Level Bilateral Meeting
According to Ushakov, the U.S. was the party to initiate the potential summit.
“At the suggestion of the American side, an agreement was agreed upon in principle to hold a bilateral meeting at the highest level,” he said, referencing Presidents Putin and Trump.
The aide emphasized that while some discussion of a possible trilateral meeting involving Ukraine took place in Washington, the Russian side did not pursue that option further.
“We propose first of all to focus on preparing a bilateral meeting with D. Trump,” Ushakov stated.
Trump Pursues Peace Deal Through Diplomatic Channels
President Trump confirmed earlier this week that his Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, had met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow. “Great progress was made!” Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday, adding that he had also briefed European allies on the outcome.
The president said, “Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
This comes amid mounting international pressure to find a resolution to the long-standing war in Ukraine. Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in positioning the United States as a mediator to bring both sides to the negotiating table.
White House Confirms Trump Is Open to Talks
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the administration’s willingness to engage.
“As President Trump said earlier today on TRUTH Social, great progress was made during Special Envoy Witkoff’s meeting with President Putin,” she said.
Leavitt also noted that the Russians had shown openness to holding direct talks with Trump.
“The President is open to meeting with both President Putin and President Zelensky. President Trump wants this brutal war to end,” she added.
The White House has yet to confirm a specific date or location for the proposed meeting, but officials on both sides appear to be working toward finalizing the details.
