President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have arrived in Anchorage, Alaska, for a high-profile summit aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
The meeting marks a rare face-to-face encounter between the two leaders and is expected to focus on achieving a ceasefire.
Trump has told European leaders in recent days that his objective is to secure a ceasefire, adding that he does not plan to discuss any division of territory during the talks.
This statement contrasts with his remarks earlier in the week, when he suggested there could be “some land swapping” between Russia and Ukraine as part of a potential agreement.
While no official details of the agenda have been released, White House officials have described the summit as an opportunity for the two leaders to directly assess the prospects for ending the conflict.
Zelenskyy Left Out of Discussions
One of the most contentious aspects of the meeting is the absence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He has been excluded from the talks, drawing concern from several European allies who believe Ukraine must be part of any meaningful negotiations.
Zelenskyy has warned that agreements reached without Ukraine’s participation will lack legitimacy and fail to produce lasting peace. “Any decisions made without Ukraine are decisions against peace,” he said earlier this week.
