The Tumbler Ridge school shooting in British Columbia left 10 people dead, including the suspected shooter, after gunfire erupted at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, Canadian police said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said six victims were found dead inside the school, while the suspect was also found dead with what police described as an apparent self-inflicted injury.
RCMP said two additional victims were later found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the incident, and another person died while being transported to a hospital. Two people were airlifted to a hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, and about 25 others were assessed for non-life-threatening injuries at a local medical center.
Police said they do not believe there are additional suspects and do not consider there to be an ongoing threat to the public.
Tumbler Ridge school shooting timeline
RCMP said officers received a report of an active shooter at the high school at about 1:20 p.m. local time. A police alert was issued as officers responded and entered the school to locate the threat, then searched the building and found multiple victims.
RCMP said all remaining students and staff were safely evacuated and police worked with the school district on a reunification process for families. The police public alert was cancelled at 5:45 p.m., after investigators said they did not believe there were any outstanding suspects.
As the investigation widened beyond the school, RCMP said officers identified a secondary location connected to the case. Inside that residence, police said two more victims were found dead. RCMP said officers continued searching other homes and properties to determine whether anyone else was injured or linked to the events.
The investigation has been taken over by BC RCMP Major Crime, with additional resources deployed that included frontline officers, an emergency response team and victim services, according to RCMP.
What investigators have said, and what remains unknown
Police have not released the suspect’s identity and have not announced a motive. Authorities also have not publicly stated whether the suspect had a confirmed connection to the school, or how many of the victims were students.
Reuters reported that an earlier active-shooter alert described the suspect as a female in a dress with brown hair, and that RCMP later confirmed the person described in the alert was the same individual found dead at the school. RCMP has released few additional details about the suspect beyond what was included in early public warnings.
Investigators have emphasized that information remains preliminary. RCMP has said it will provide additional updates as details become available, including as officers complete searches tied to the secondary location and determine how the two scenes are connected.
For families, the most urgent questions are about victims’ identities and the condition of those hospitalized. RCMP said two people were airlifted with serious or life-threatening injuries. Officials have not released medical updates beyond those initial descriptions.
