TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Three people were killed and seven others injured in a shooting at an In-N-Out restaurant in southern Idaho on Saturday afternoon. Police found the suspected gunman dead near the restaurant, but authorities had not immediately clarified whether he was included in the reported death toll.
Several of the injured victims were in critical condition. Officials were still notifying relatives and had not released the victims’ names, ages or other identifying information early Sunday.
Gunfire Erupts During a Busy Afternoon
The shooting began at approximately 2 p.m. in a crowded commercial area of Twin Falls. Hundreds of people were visiting the restaurant and surrounding businesses when gunfire prompted customers and employees to flee or take cover.
Police Chief Matthew Hicks described the response as chaotic but said authorities believed the threat to the community had ended. Officers closed nearby roads and moved witnesses to separate locations so investigators could begin conducting interviews.
The first priority was locating the attacker and providing medical assistance. Emergency responders transported multiple patients to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center while officers searched the restaurant, parking areas and surrounding properties.
A mass-casualty response can involve several agencies with different responsibilities. Police secure the scene, firefighters and paramedics treat the wounded, hospitals prepare for additional patients and investigators begin preserving evidence.
Suspected Gunman Found Dead Near Restaurant
Responding officers found the body of the suspected gunman in an area near the restaurant. City spokesman Josh Palmer said it was not immediately clear whether the suspect was counted among the three reported deaths.
Police were still working to confirm the shooter’s identity and determine a motive. Authorities had not said whether the attack was directed at particular victims, connected to an employment dispute or carried out indiscriminately.
The cause of the suspect’s death also required official confirmation. Witness accounts and preliminary reports can help investigators, but a final determination ordinarily depends on physical evidence and the county coroner’s findings.

Witnesses Describe a Rapidly Unfolding Attack
One witness said he saw a person carrying an AR-style rifle emerge from the drive-thru area. He also reported seeing another man use a pistol to fire at the gunman, although police had not publicly provided a complete account of that exchange.
The same witness described an In-N-Out employee dragging a wounded co-worker across the parking lot. He and others remained with the injured employee until paramedics arrived.
Another witness said employees and customers began running after shots were heard near the restaurant. People in the drive-thru initially believed there might have been a fire before learning that an active shooter was nearby.
Witness statements will need to be compared with surveillance footage and forensic evidence. People experiencing a violent emergency may see different portions of an event, and early accounts can contain honest but significant differences.
A Busy Shopping District Became a Crime Scene
The restaurant is located in a heavily traveled shopping district where large weekend crowds were present. The number of people in the area created both additional risk and an unusually large pool of potential witnesses.

The In-N-Out had opened only about a week earlier, on July 24. The opening attracted substantial local attention as the California-based chain continued its expansion into Idaho.
The recent opening may mean that employees and neighboring businesses have extensive security footage from systems installed or tested for expected crowds. Those recordings could help investigators reconstruct the attacker’s movements before, during and after the shooting.
Seven Victims Were Reported Injured
City officials raised the number of injured victims to seven, with some listed in critical condition. The final number could change as hospitals and law-enforcement agencies reconcile information from the scene.
Officials generally delay releasing names until relatives are notified. That process can take time when victims carry no identification, families live outside the area or medical staff remain focused on emergency treatment.
The severity of injuries can also evolve. A victim initially described as stable can deteriorate, while rapid surgery and trauma care may improve the outlook for someone first listed in critical condition.
St. Luke’s said it was coordinating with law enforcement and emergency responders. Hospitals responding to shootings may increase security, call additional staff and restrict access to protect patients and preserve privacy.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was assisting with the investigation. Federal participation can help trace weapons, analyze ammunition and coordinate information involving firearms purchased or transported across state lines.
Local police remain responsible for the primary investigation unless evidence creates a separate federal case. State and county prosecutors will review the findings and determine whether any surviving participant could face criminal charges.
Investigators were interviewing hundreds of witnesses. That process will require identifying which people directly observed the shooting, which recorded video and which can provide information about the suspect before the attack.
Authorities may also receive a large volume of social-media posts and private recordings. Digital evidence must be authenticated and preserved so it can be used reliably in a criminal or public-safety investigation.
Police Say the Immediate Threat Has Ended
Hicks said authorities believed the active danger to the community was over. That statement allowed residents to distinguish the continuing investigation from an ongoing search for an armed attacker.
Police still urged people to avoid the area while roads remained closed. A scene can remain restricted for many hours as technicians photograph evidence, mark cartridge casings and document the position of vehicles and other objects.
Public caution is also important because inaccurate reports can spread quickly after a mass shooting. Officials planned another news conference to provide verified information as the investigation progressed.
Residents with recordings or direct knowledge should provide original material to investigators rather than editing or circulating it first. Preserving timestamps and complete files can make the evidence more useful.
Twin Falls Begins Mourning the Victims
Twin Falls has a population of about 56,000 and serves as a regional commercial center in southern Idaho. A shooting involving numerous local workers, customers and witnesses is likely to affect schools, churches, businesses and families throughout the community.
