Trump crypto taxes could total hundreds of millions of dollars after President Donald Trump reported more than $1.4 billion in crypto-related income in his latest financial disclosure, tax experts told CBS News.

The president’s crypto income appears taxable, and one accountant who specializes in cryptocurrency income said it was reasonable to believe Trump would have to pay at least $250 million on the income, CBS News reported.

The actual tax bill remains unclear because Trump does not make his tax returns public and because the corporate entities receiving or holding the income are not fully transparent, experts told the outlet.

Trump Crypto Taxes Could Reach Hundreds Of Millions

If the entire $1.4 billion were taxed at the top federal individual income tax rate of 37%, Trump would owe $518 million to the IRS before deductions, CBS News calculated.

That figure is not a confirmed tax bill. CBS News reported that several tax experts said the amount Trump actually owes may be lower, depending on whether the income is treated as ordinary income, capital gains or business income, and whether losses or deductions apply.

Omri Marian, a University of California, Irvine law professor who specializes in cryptocurrency taxation, told CBS News that the limited descriptions in the financial disclosure make it impossible to determine the precise tax consequences for Trump personally or for the entities involved.

Disclosure Listed $1.4 Billion In Crypto Income

Trump reported more than $1.4 billion in income from his family’s crypto ventures in 2025, Reuters reported after reviewing the president’s annual disclosure filed with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics.

The filing showed that companies tied to Trump received nearly $800 million from World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture co-founded by Trump and his sons. Reuters reported that the figure included more than $520 million from token sales and more than $250 million from the sale of interests in the World Liberty business.

Trump also reported $635 million from sales of his Trump meme coins, Reuters reported.

CBS News reported that the $1.4 billion in crypto-related income was the largest part of the roughly $2.2 billion Trump listed on his 2025 disclosure forms.

Why The Tax Bill Is Unclear

The tax treatment depends on how the income was received and where it ultimately flowed. CBS News reported that the $635 million tied to the $TRUMP meme coin was listed as a royalty from a licensing agreement with Celebration Coins.

The same report said World Liberty Financial paid Trump more than $590 million in proceeds from digital token sales and the sale of an equity stake in the business.

Tax experts said the income could be taxed differently if it was paid to Trump personally or to a business entity associated with him. Business income could face a lower corporate tax rate, while losses could offset some gains in either structure.

The White House declined to answer CBS News questions about how much tax Trump paid on the crypto income, whether it was taxed personally or through business entities and whether operating losses were applied.

IRS Rules Cover Digital Assets

The IRS says digital assets are treated as property for U.S. tax purposes. The agency says digital assets can include cryptocurrency, stablecoins and other representations of value recorded on a blockchain or similar technology.

The IRS also says taxpayers who sell digital assets for U.S. dollars or similar currency must recognize any capital gain or loss, subject to applicable limitations.

That does not resolve Trump’s specific tax situation. CBS News reported that experts could not determine from the disclosure alone whether the crypto money would be treated as capital gains, ordinary income or another form of business income.

White House Rejects Conflict Claims

Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday that he does not get involved in his personal financial dealings and said institutions run his money.

“I don’t get involved,” Trump said, adding that “we have funds that run my money,” Reuters reported.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told Reuters that neither Trump nor his family has engaged in conflicts of interest and said Trump’s administration acts in the best interest of the American people.

CBS News reported that many of Trump’s crypto earnings appeared tied to ventures connected to him and his family, while congressional Democrats have criticized his crypto wealth and the administration’s support for easing industry regulations. The White House has rejected those conflict-of-interest allegations.
