American technology is playing a growing role in Ukraine strikes Russia is now struggling to stop, as Kyiv uses U.S.-made reconnaissance drones, satellite communications and battlefield software to identify targets deep inside Russian-held territory and beyond the front lines.

CBS News reported that a U.S.-made V-BAT surveillance drone manufactured by Shield AI helped Ukrainian forces identify Russian troops and military equipment on an oil rig near Ukraine’s southern coast before the Ukrainian navy attacked the platform with sea drones and an aerial drone. The engagement destroyed what Ukraine’s navy described as a Russian platform for strikes into Ukrainian regions.

The report comes as Ukraine expands a long-range campaign against Russian oil, logistics and military infrastructure. Reuters reported that Ukrainian “mid-strike” drones have been hitting fuel storage sites, supply lines, air-defense installations and command centers, while AP reported that Ukrainian drones struck Russian oil facilities and set tankers ablaze in the Sea of Azov.

Ukraine Strikes Russia With Better Targeting

The most important part of the story is not that American-made equipment exists in Ukraine. That has been true for years. The shift is how Ukraine is using reconnaissance and communications technology to make cheaper strike systems more precise, more frequent and more strategically disruptive.

The V-BAT is not simply another small battlefield drone. Shield AI describes it as a Group 3 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft built for targeting in electronic warfare conditions. The company says the system can fly for more than 12 hours with an electro-optical/infrared payload and operate in GPS-denied and communications-contested environments.

CBS reported that Ukrainian operators value the V-BAT because it can observe from long range, confirm targets and collect imagery without getting too close. That matters when Russian air defenses, electronic warfare systems and surveillance assets can destroy slower or less capable drones.

This is the modern battlefield lesson Washington should study closely. The war is not being shaped only by tanks, artillery and missiles. It is being shaped by the side that can see farther, adapt faster and feed better intelligence into relatively low-cost weapons.

Ukraine has turned that model into a pressure campaign. According to CBS, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described a 40-day influence operation intended to coerce Russia into ending the war. That phrase is blunt, and it reveals Kyiv’s theory of victory: bring the consequences of war deeper into Russia until Moscow feels costs it can no longer ignore.

American Drone Maker Faces Wartime Test

Shield AI’s V-BAT has become an example of how private American defense firms can shape allied warfare without deploying U.S. troops. CBS reported that Shield AI employees in Ukraine are receiving battlefield feedback from Ukrainian operators and using it to improve aircraft and software.

That is a powerful feedback loop. A peacetime procurement cycle can take years. Ukrainian units are adapting under fire in days or weeks. That is why the war has become a brutal innovation laboratory for drones, jammers, counter-jammers, sensors, artificial intelligence and battlefield communications.

For American taxpayers, there is a strong argument that this kind of support is more efficient than traditional blank-check nation-building. Helping an ally use precision technology to degrade a hostile military can be cheaper and less risky than sending U.S. forces into another conflict.

But there are also legitimate concerns. Reuters previously investigated Shield AI’s V-BAT safety record and reported that the aircraft had crashed more than 50 times over 18 months across global operations. CBS noted that Reuters report while explaining that Ukrainian operators say the wartime environment is exactly where the necessary improvements can be made.

That is the tradeoff. Wartime innovation moves fast because it has to. But speed should not become an excuse for sloppy oversight, inflated claims or hidden safety problems. Defense startups should be rewarded for results, not hype.

Starlink And Jamming Shape The Fight

The American-made technology story goes beyond the V-BAT. Reuters reported that Ukraine’s mid-range drone attacks are often flown using Starlink, the satellite internet system operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Ukrainian drone commanders told Reuters that Russia is now trying to disrupt those missions by hiding military cargo and deploying powerful jamming systems.

That means the fight is increasingly about electronic dominance. Russia is not just trying to shoot drones down. It is trying to blind them, cut their communications and sever the link between pilot, platform and target. Ukraine, in turn, is trying to preserve connectivity, route around jamming and use reconnaissance drones to identify Russian defenses before strike drones arrive.

Reuters reported that Russian jamming systems are being installed near towns and military facilities and can destabilize Starlink connections over significant areas. Ukrainian commanders said Russia is also disguising cargoes in civilian-looking vehicles, a sign that Kyiv’s drone campaign is forcing Moscow to change behavior behind the front.

That is exactly what military pressure is supposed to do. A successful strike campaign does not need to destroy every Russian asset. It needs to force Russia to move slower, spend more, protect more territory and make more mistakes.

Russia Warns The Strategy Could Backfire

Moscow is not treating these strikes as a minor nuisance. Reuters reported that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Washington is wrong if it believes deeper Ukrainian strikes could help end the war. He warned that escalation would force Russia to expand what it calls a security buffer zone.

That Russian argument should be taken seriously, but not at face value. Moscow started the war. It has bombarded Ukrainian cities, targeted infrastructure and used long-range missiles and drones throughout the conflict. Russia now objects because Ukraine is building the ability to hit back more effectively.

Still, the risk of escalation is real. Longer-range Ukrainian strikes can damage Russia’s military and fuel networks, but they can also harden the Kremlin’s position. AP reported that Ukraine’s recent drone strikes on Russian oil facilities triggered fuel shortages and rationing in multiple regions, while Moscow responded with intensified missile attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

That is the grim logic of war. Pressure can create leverage, but it can also create retaliation. The Trump administration and Congress should understand both sides of that equation before expanding any support that enables deeper strikes.

U.S. Policy Should Demand Clear Limits

The United States has a legitimate interest in helping Ukraine resist Russian aggression without putting American soldiers on the battlefield. American-made reconnaissance systems, air defenses and communications tools can help Kyiv defend itself and increase the cost of Moscow’s invasion.

But Washington also needs discipline. The public should know what kinds of U.S.-made technology are being provided, what restrictions apply and whether American personnel or contractors are involved in targeting support. There is a major difference between selling or supplying equipment and directly guiding strikes into Russian territory.

CBS reported that the U.S. stopped providing certain forms of intelligence for Ukraine to strike inside Russia in March 2025, pushing Kyiv to rely more on European partners and its own drones. That distinction matters. If Ukraine is using American-made platforms independently, that is different from Washington selecting targets.

A strong policy would pair support for Ukraine with clear boundaries. Help Kyiv see, defend and strike legitimate military targets. Avoid direct U.S. operational control. Demand accountability for exported technology. Keep Congress informed. And make sure the mission remains tied to ending the war on terms that protect U.S. interests.

Ukraine’s battlefield success shows the value of American innovation. It also shows why the United States cannot afford a slow, bloated defense procurement system while startups, software and autonomous systems are changing war in real time.

The lesson is not that America should write unlimited checks. It is that American technology, properly used and tightly monitored, can help allies impose costs on adversaries without turning every crisis into a U.S. ground war. That is a strategy worth pursuing, but only with transparency, limits and a clear-eyed understanding of escalation risk.
